NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State New Kensington softball team dropped two conference games to Penn State DuBois Tuesday afternoon. DuBois won by a score of 13-5 in the first game before coming back to win 9-7 in the night cap. New Kensington's record falls to 1-11 and 1-5 in the PSUAC, while DuBois improves to 2-8 and 2-6, PSUAC.
DuBois got on the scoreboard with two runs in the first. New Kensington scored in the first inning when Amanda Dynoske singled and then was sent home on a base hit by Morgan Williams (East Berlin, Pa.). DuBois scored three runs each in the second and fourth innings to bring its lead to 8-1. Back-to-back doubles by Stephanie Schrecengost (Rural Valley, Pa.) and Brittney Wolford (Lower Burrell, Pa.) led to a New Kensington run in the fifth, but DuBois came back with another three runs in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, a Rebecca Wilhelm (Leechburg, Pa.) single followed by two walks loaded the bases for Lauren Torgent (Brackenridge, Pa.). Torgent came through with a double, bringing home two. DuBois scored twice more before a Wilhelm RBI single brought the final score to 13-5.
In the second game, New Kensington struck first, drawing three walks to load the bases once more for Torgent. She struck a base hit to push across two runs and Schrecengost brought in another to go up 3-0. The game went scoreless for three innings until DuBois posted five runs in the fifth inning. Torgent scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 5-4.
Each team scored two runs in the sixth inning. For New Kensington, Erika Finn (New Kensington, Pa.) hit a sac fly to bring home Wilhelm and a DuBois error allowed Williams to score. Two more runs by DuBois in the seveth made the score 9-6. New Kensington loaded the bases with just one out, but only managed one run on their last attempt, ending the game at 9-7.
For the day, Schrecengost had five hits, while Torgent batted in five runs on two hits. Dynoske and Wilhelm each picked up three hits for New Kensington.
New Kensington will seek to even the series when it travels to DuBois for a double header Wednesday evening. The first game of the double head will begin at 4:00 p.m.
