USCAA National All-Academic Team Includes Seven New Kensington Student-Athletes

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - Seven Penn State New Kensington student-athletes have earned a spot on a United States Collegiate Athletic Association National All-Academic Team for the fall sports season. Men's soccer player Elian Buchi (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Nolan Johngarlo (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area), Ben Midlik (Hempfield Twp., Pa./Hempfield) and Nicholas Nicassio (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg) and women's volleyball players, Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), Lindsey Hessom (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area), and Janet Surma (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) were all honored.

The USCAA National All-Academic Award recognizes student-athletes that have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average and have earned at least 24 credits at a USCAA institution. 

Buchi, a junior biobehavioral health major, competed with the men's soccer team for the first time this season, helping the team to a third place finich in the Penn State University Athletic Conference. 

Johngarlo is a sophomore majoring in business administration. He led the team with six assists this season and also added four goals.

Midlik adds this National All-Academic Award to his list of accomplishments for the season. He was also named the USCAA Division II Men's Soccer Student-Athlete of the Year and place on the second team all-PSUAC team.  Midlik is a electrical engineering major. Raggiunti is seeking a degree in project and supply chain management and is a first-year member of the golf team. His low round for the season was an 86 at the PSUAC Blue Invitational.

Nicassio, a senior business management and marketing major, is receiving this award in his first year of being elgible for it after transferring to New Kensington in 2018. 

Flick was named the USCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year as well as a USCAA All-American Honorable Mention selection. Flick will graduate a year early in May with a degree in biobehavioral health. This award is her second National All-Academic Team recognition. 

Hessom, senior and winner of the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award, is a business major with a concentration in management and marketing. She is receiving National All-Academic team honors for the second time. 

Surma is also receiving this award for the second time. A junior journalism major,  she lead the team in digs with 188 and was second in kills with 104.

Since 2006, 54 New Kensington student-athletes have been included on the USCAA National All-Academic Team, receiving a total of 61 awards. Click here to see all past honorees.
