Rally in Seventh but Fall to Shenango, 12–4
New Kensington, Pa. – A late-game push in the seventh inning wasn't enough for Penn State New Kensington to overcome a powerful offensive outing from visiting Penn State Shenango on Tuesday afternoon, as the Lions dropped a 12–4 decision at home.
Shenango wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, erupting for five runs in the top of the second inning. A two-run home run from catcher John Perry jumpstarted the frame, with Dominic Fornataro and JA Quahliero also contributing RBI hits. Shenango added two more in the fifth on a pair of aggressive baserunning plays and continued piling on with five additional runs across the sixth and seventh innings.
New Kensington struggled to get anything going against Shenango starter Nate Evans, who allowed just one hit and struck out seven over six scoreless innings. But the Lions showed heart in their final chance at the plate.
Down 12–0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions loaded the bases and capitalized on a hit-by-pitch and a pair of RBI groundouts to plate two runs. Miguel Garcia followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 12–4, but Shenango reliever Will Perry managed to record the final outs to halt the rally.
Garcia led the way offensively for New Kensington, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Nat Greenslet and Karter Weitzel each added an RBI, and Thomas Santiago Jr., William Celko, Sean Walker, and Matt Hodgins all scored in the final inning.
Despite the loss, New Kensington's defense turned two double plays in the field. Zander Allen took the loss on the mound, allowing six earned runs over five innings.
