PSNK Drops Three of Four in Regular Season Finale
The Penn State New Kensington Softball team (10-12, 9-7) was only able to pick up one win in the final home swing at Wolfpack Park this past weekend. The New Ken Lions picked up a split against Penn State Schuylkill (13-7, 9-5) on Saturday and was swept by Penn State Mont Alto (18-6, 15-1) on Sunday.
In game one on Saturday, Tarra Oravec and Bryanna Snowell both put together great pitching performances. Schuylkill was able to plate the lone run in the top of the fourth inning.
New Kensington was able to get back on track in the second half of the double header with a 4-3 victory. Rachel Lojas and Oravec hit back to back home runs to lift PSNK in the bottom of the fifth. Oravec was able to go 3-3 on the day with 3 RBIs and a run scored in game two. Katie Colbert put together a great hitting performance going 2-3 and scoring twice.
On Sunday, game one against Penn State Mont Alto came down to the wire with the visiting team squeaking out a victory in the seventh inning, 4-3. Neither club was able to score until the sixth inning of game one, when both teams put up three runs a piece. Kieara Fleagle led the way for Mont Alto going 2-2 with two RBIs in a substitution role. Fleagle, Mackenzie Trafka, and Kristyan Gates all had RBIs in the sixth inning with Fleagle tacking on what proved to be the game winning RBI in the second.
Oravec sent another ball over the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer to tie the game at 3-3. Colbert and Lojas were able to reach base safely prior to the Oravec home run.
In the season finale, Penn State Mont Alto was able to get on Oravec early and chase her from the pitching circle. New Kensington was unable to find an answer of their own and wound up on the short end of game two, 8-2.
With the regular season complete, Penn State New Kensington must wait to see whether their record will hold to advance to the PSUAC Playoffs.
